3 Reasons Why September Is the Right Time to Get a Home Security System

What is it about September that makes it more like the beginning of a new year than a new season? For me, this will be the first time in 19 years I’m not sending someone off to school, with summer ending on Labor Day, because our youngest is headed off to college and we’ll be empty nesters when the first day of school rolls around. Yet still, I have the “September fresh start” mindset, I can tell.

It’s not just me. There’s something about this time of year. I see work colleagues kick it into gear with new energy, friends take on new projects, and people all around me trying to get more organized when it’s the start of a new school year—even more so than when it’s the start of a whole new year on January 1!

Maybe it’s all the new pens and papers and school supplies. Maybe it’s the newly organized classrooms. Maybe it’s the optimism that pervades the start of a new school year. Or perhaps it’s all of that together that puts us into this frame of mind.

Regardless of the reason, the September mindset and the impending autumn both make it a great time to finally look into a home security system, for several reasons. Kids are back in school, which can mean tricky latchkey kid situations, with the kids getting home before the parents—or leaving after the parents in the morning. Days will start getting shorter as we start our march toward winter, and night will come earlier when Daylight Savings comes to an end in October. For many of us in the U.S., this is also the time of chilly mornings, when the thermostat gets back to work keeping our homes warm.

For all of these three reasons—empty houses, kids, lighting, heat—it’s a good time to get that home security system at last. Here’s why…

  • Empty houses: A sign in the yard can be a huge deterrent to a potential burglar. Homes without an advertised home security system are three times more likely to be burglarized than those homes that do have a sign in the yard. And keep in mind that most burglaries happen during the day…when everyone is at work and school.
  • Kids: We live in an age when many kids come home to an empty house. It’s a reality, but it’s one that a home security system can make much easier to manage—and safer too! You can lock doors remotely, use video to keep an eye on things, and make sure the lights are on and the thermostat is at the right temperature, even without being there.
  • Lighting: Shorter days and longer nights mean coming home to a dark house and wanting your house to look occupied even when it’s not. Your home security system can be set to turn lights on and off based on the schedule you want, and some systems even let you change those settings remotely. This includes outdoor lighting too, so no one has to get home in the dark and fumble through the front yard with poor visibility.

Do you have a September mindset too? And are you looking into a home security system or maybe an upgrade? Then now is the perfect time to take advantage of your readiness to act—and to get your family squared away before the pumpkins start turning orange!
